Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about Two-Factor Authentication
What is two-factor authentication?
It's a form of authentication that provides enhanced security by requiring not only the usual username and password but also a second, temporary password that is valid for a few minutes (typically 2–10 minutes). This temporary password can be sent via email, SMS, or generated by an external application that operates independently from the website.
Finis.hu provides exactly this kind of service.
What does 2FA mean?
2FA is the abbreviation of the English term "Two-Factor Authentication".
What does TOTP mean?
It’s a technology that uses a "secret key" and the current time to generate unique, one-time codes. These codes are valid for 30 seconds, after which new ones are generated. This is useful because if someone tries to steal your password online, they won’t be able to use it since it expires quickly.
TOTP is a security solution that works like a magical key that constantly changes. Only those who have the secret "starter key" can calculate what the next key (password) will be.
The Finis.hu site uses this technology to generate second-level passwords for you.
Where else can I generate such keys?
If you have a smartphone, you can download the Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or NISZ Authenticator apps. These will also generate the same type of passwords. If you're looking for a site similar to Finis.hu, the totp.app website works similarly, but it's available in English and Russian.
Questions about the Finis.hu website
Do I need to register on the site?
No, not only is registration unnecessary, but it is not even possible on Finis.hu. The site can be used without registration.
Do I have to pay to use the site?
No, the site is completely free to use.
What are labels?
Since Finis.hu can generate passwords for multiple websites at once, you need to create so-called labels. Each label will continuously generate one password. To create a label, two pieces of information are required: the Secret Key (which makes the generated password unique), and the label name (which is used only to distinguish between labels).
Why are there multiple passwords under a label?
A label can display up to the last four passwords. The newest one appears at the top in larger font.
You can still see a few previous passwords because the site you’re trying to log in to usually accepts older passwords for a couple of minutes (typically two minutes). (They don’t expect you to copy the freshly generated password within 30 seconds...)
Where is the data stored?
In a file handled by the browser running on your computer (device), known as a cookie. Only the browser can access this file. If you delete the cookies related to Finis.hu, all your saved data will also be deleted.
How can I edit a label?
To edit a label, click the gear icon at the bottom of the label. This will allow you to modify the saved data.
How can I delete a label?
To delete a label, click the trash can icon at the bottom of the label. This will remove the saved data.
Can I save the labels?
Yes, you can do this by clicking on the "Save labels to file" link. The label data will be saved in a file with the ".fin" extension. This file can later be imported from another browser or device.
How can I import labels that were previously saved to a file?
Click the "Import labels from file" link, and the saved labels will be loaded.
If I already have saved labels, will they be overwritten when importing from a file?
No. Your existing labels will remain, and the labels from the file will be added alongside them.
(However, if there’s a label with a Secret Key that was already saved and it also appears in the file, only one label will remain. This label will take the name from the file.)
Questions about the "Ügyfélkapu+" service
Where can I find the Secret Key in my "Ügyfélkapu"?
You receive this code when activating the "Ügyfélkapu+" service. You won’t be able to find it on the website later. If you've lost or forgotten your Secret Key, you can generate a new one by deactivating the "Ügyfélkapu+" service (you’ll need your Deactivation Code), and then reactivating it. It’s important to keep both the Secret Key and the Deactivation Code safe!
I’ve lost my "Ügyfélkapu" Deactivation Code — what should I do?
In that case, you need to visit a Government Office (Kormányablak) in person to request a new one.
How do I connect Finis.hu to my "Ügyfélkapu"?
Note that you only need a second-level password generator like Finis.hu if you’re using "Ügyfélkapu+". If you're using the standard "Ügyfélkapu", such a service is not required.
For "Ügyfélkapu+", we've written detailed instructions on a separate page, which you can find here.
